I'm Jennifer, and my husband Robert, daughters Cheyenne, Kalyn and Evie would like to welcome you to our farm!
I grew up riding horses with Redland Hunt Pony Club in Maryland. We sold our horses before I went off to college, but I never stopped dreaming about owning one again. After we got married and moved to Danville, VA we began our family. As the girls got a little older that dream of owning a little horse farm grew stronger. In 2017, we built our forever farmhouse here on 12 acres and shortly after we brought home our first horse.
I always rode the "stinky" horses. Deep down I had a love for working with them and watching them come out on top, but I didn't realize how much I would appreciate the knowledge of training horses until I began shopping for a truly bomb-proof pony for my own children. Finding the right pony was nearly impossible. Most horses people claimed as child safe I wouldn't dare put my child on. This is when I really kicked it in high gear and learned all I could about training horses. I'm not a perfect rider, or a perfect trainer. I'm just a mom doing my best to create rideable, and safe horses for my children to be around. I know when I put a horse out on the cross ties - my four year old is safe to brush that horse, and even ride it.
Well rounded horses with a droopy lip is my "motto". My hope is that we can work with a few along our journey and offer them to you. My goal is to create horses that kids can feel safe on, but most importantly have FUN on. A child should be able to hop on and go cantering across an open field with the biggest smile. They should be able to show their pony at a local horse show, or show with Pony Club, take it on a trail ride, jump it, play games on it, lay across it bareback and jump off from behind.....and that pony should behave and stand quietly through all of it. All horses & ponies have their quirks and their moments, but overall it should be safe. When a pony leaves our farm, it will have been exposed to all of these things and more.
We hope you enjoy your time looking around. As you'll see, I am sort of a "jack of all trades". I love all things farm life. From horses and chickens to cooking, gardening and decorating....hopefully through it all you'll get to know a little about our family and our life here on Rockfish Farm.
